A New Age Of Prosperity (Not Really)

Tuesday, September 5th, 2023

Tumblr tells me it’s been a glorious two years since I started my blog over there. I’ve been blogging over here for longer than that, but it feels fitting that I jumped over a hurdle on this dot-com side of things just yesterday: the comments section ACTUALLY WORKS! I’d heard it hadn’t been working by some Tumblr troll a while back and assumed that it would eventually fix itself. It didn’t. But now it works.

I’ve been sluggish with my long form posting lately because school and newfound hobbies keep me busy. But having been in a very opinionated mood lately, I seek to get back into it more. Also, with comments being back, I hope that I can facilitate some degree of intellectual discussion here. Facebook can be fun, but people deserve more than overgeneralized infographics and filter bubbles all the time. Our brains deserve a jog.

I am a firm believer that one day there will be a wider rejection of reductive internet bickering and a shift towards more nuanced discussions in such a format as this, so I hope this page can be a space for the beginning of that, as it has always been intended to be. Fire up that RSS feed, people.

I’m sorry that the post immediately before this one is disturbing.

I updated the DEVO web archival site me and a friend started years ago for the first time since literally last summer. Just as a reminder that it exists.

Woe Is Me

Funny that I’m spending the first year anniversary of getting my COVID vaccine slightly under the weather (though I tested negative). Spin some Jihad Jerry for me, please…

One Year Of Transmissions From The Battlefield

Sunday, April 10th, 2022

Time really flies.

I made my first post on this very blog one year ago. The idea of having my own blog had been floating around in my brain for a while at that point, and I had finally bit the bullet. It felt liberating to have my own corner of the internet, my own .com not tethered to any conglomerous online entity (though I eventually cloned my blog on Tumblr out of an unconditional adoration of the platform despite its faults). That feeling still remains.

When I blog, I’m a top secret agent logging my perspective on the world—that’s pretty much why I started blogging in the first place. No one was going to document those thoughts and opinions other than myself, and being able to do so lets me be free. Here and on Tumblr, I’m unaffected by character limits or “threads.” I don’t have to sloganize everything I say or strip my thoughts of their context or depth. I don’t have to dumb myself down. It’s my way of being independent as I await the promised land of O-Hi-O for college, and I know that what I’ll be up to over in those parts will be supplying me with plenty of fuel for my typey-typey. It brings me a lot of satisfaction to put my thoughts out into the world, and I don’t plan on stopping anytime soon.

Viva la blogosphere. (Whatever that is.)

P.S.: You may notice that things have been looking a little different around here. I’m not not still “in the red,” so to speak, with how I see the world. But with all the chaos—and that’s somehow the best kind of chaos—coming up in my life, I guess I’ve been needing some time to chill out. Out of the red, into the blue?

The Chicks Are Too Real

Wednesday, March 23rd, 2022

My personal copy of my friend Max’s most recent album—which I did the album art for—has finally arrived in the mail! Interesting compromise of packaging aside, it’s an honor to have my artwork exhibited out there in the world in this way—and to have it attributed to such a solid album!

The sweater I’m wearing here I had completely forgot about and not worn in over a year until after was completely finished with the album cover. Gotta dress for the occasion…

Go listen to it here: https://zhir.bandcamp.com/album/big-mac-in-a-small-world

The Fish Has Come Out

Saturday, February 12th, 2022

My friend Max’s new album is out! If you’re looking for something tantalizingly zesty, intellectually stimulating, and totally DEV-O, this is the album for you. (I’m the one behind the album art, by the way.)

Now go listen to it!

A Quick Public Service Announcement…

…My good friend Max is coming out with a new album this weekend, and I designed the album art! Go look at it!

Twenty Twenty Twenty One Hours Gone

Saturday, January 1st, 2022

Jeez, how did this year go by so fast?

In the midst of the chaos of 2021, it was actually a great year for me on a personal level. I remained dedicated to my studies and hobbies despite a worldwide pandemic and repeated human fallacy telling most people that giving up is the better option; I was able to go out and actually do things after a year indoors, meeting people I have always wanted to meet and going places I have always wanted to go; I started this here blog. I can tell that the person I am has become more mature and more realized, due in no small part to support from all the people I have connected with and the experiences I have had along my way. I’m grateful for all of it, and I know I personally wouldn’t want a do-over…

…even though the world could really use one. If this year proved anything on a major scale, it was that we as humans are all still self-obsessed, anxious, confused little babies with false concepts of freedom and liberty implanted in our heads, acting on our base impulses. Every headline about humans ignoring COVID safety protocol and media pundits taking advantage of ignorance for their own selfish gains has been more agonizing than the last. The Omicron strain doing its very un-sexy thing doesn’t help. I received my booster shot on Monday—and that’s after two jabs and a minor bout with the ‘rona—but I’m still a human. And humans are as resilient as they are fragile.

But then again, every year is its own strain of hell; COVID just made the flames higher and the stupid crap stupider. Being able to recognize that certain things are, at their core, extremely stupid and laughable is a really crucial part of making life somewhat enjoyable. And I sure did a lot of that last year!

So what does this year have in store? For me, it means escape—escape to the college of my choice and a chance to start fresh. It’s the only thing that seems certain when it seems like the ability to do anything exciting is based entirely on how reckless other humans want to act on any given day. It’s hard thinking about the future when things seem so murky. In the meantime I’m trying to follow the advice assorted elders push upon me: savor this time while you still can.

The mask mandates that are repealed or disregarded…the underlying shiftiness of newfound lukewarm winters…the recklessness of humankind on display everywhere from the grocery store to the Facebook feed…the creepy fake ducks I saw in a (most likely man made) pond outside a developed community I drove by last weekend…varying states of growth and regression, evolution and de-evolution…what a weird, fascinating time to savor.

Happy 2022!

“Are You Ready?”

Friday, November 5th, 2021

I apologize for the long posting break I’ve been on. I haven’t written anything in a few weeks due to a combination of business and self-preparation for this very weekend.

I’ll be attending the DEVOtional in Ohio and the coinciding 5KDEVO for the next few days. The in-person event last year was replaced by a live stream thanks to our lovely friend COVID-19, so I expect a triumphant and exhilarating return. Having attended the last two gatherings before COVID put the kibosh on them, my head and my hopes are high for my third. Expect many recollections and photos after the weekend has wrapped up.

Let’s go.

Hello, (New) World!

Monday, September 6th, 2021

I apologize for the lack of posts in the last week. My silence was due to both a small bout of writer’s block and me organizing other social media pages of mine in the hopes of getting my word out there more effectively.

The most important of these social media “upgrades” comes today, a day I should really be taking a break (Happy Labor Day!). I have launched the Transmissions From The Battlefield Tumblr blog! It will serve not as a replacement to this site but rather a companion. All posts on here will be posted over there, and they’ll hopefully be able to reach more eyes over there. Exercise the freedom of choice you have left to choose one or the other, both, or neither. It doesn’t matter!

See you in the Tumblrsphere!
